Tung Wah College Non-JUPAS: Application Deadlines and GPA Entry Requirements

In recent years, Tung Wah College (TWC) has emerged as a premier choice for higher education, particularly for its specialized Allied Health degree programmes. With offerings in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Radiation Therapy, Medical Laboratory Science, and Nursing, TWC provides a stable career trajectory. Graduates are eligible to apply for professional registration immediately upon completion.

This article outlines the latest admission information, including Non-JUPAS GPA expectations and application deadlines, to ensure you are well-prepared for your application. If you are considering TWC via the Non-JUPAS route, this guide is essential reading.

What is Non-JUPAS?

Non-JUPAS refers to the admission channel for applicants who do not apply through the "Joint University Programmes Admissions System" (JUPAS). Applicants must submit their applications directly to the institution’s online portal. Typical candidates include local students holding sub-degree qualifications (Associate Degrees or Higher Diplomas), international school students (e.g., IB or GCE A-Level candidates), or those with overseas academic credentials.

Why are Non-JUPAS Students Increasingly Choosing Tung Wah College?

The surge in Non-JUPAS applications to TWC is primarily driven by its suite of Allied Health programmes, most of which have attained local professional accreditation. For instance, Nursing graduates may apply to the Nursing Council of Hong Kong to become Registered Nurses. Similarly, graduates in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Radiation Therapy, and Medical Laboratory Science can seek professional registration provided they meet specific programme requirements.

Given that medical places in UGC-funded universities are limited and highly competitive, many students view TWC as a robust alternative pathway to securing professional qualifications [1].

Tung Wah College Non-JUPAS Admission Requirements

TWC maintains specific standards for Non-JUPAS applicants based on their academic backgrounds. Please refer to the following criteria to plan your application:

General Admission Requirements

The following table outlines the minimum entry scores for various qualifications. Applicants should also review specific subject requirements for their chosen department to enhance their chances of admission [2][3]:

Qualification Minimum Entry Requirements
HKDSE Minimum of "332A2": Level 3 in Chinese and English; Level 2 in Mathematics (Compulsory); Level 2 in one Elective; and "Attained" in Citizenship and Social Development.
IB Diploma Completion of the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum total score of 24.
US SAT New SAT: Total score of 1190 or above (out of 1600). / Old SAT: Total score of 1650 or above across the three main sections (out of 2400).
UK GCE A-Level Grade E in three A-Level subjects; OR Grade E in two A-Level and two AS-Level subjects.
Gaokao (Mainland) Scores exceeding the "Second Tier" cutoff for key universities in the relevant province/city, with a minimum of 100 in English.
Associate Degree / Higher Diploma Completion of a locally recognised Associate Degree or Higher Diploma, or being in the final year of such a programme.

English Language Proficiency

In addition to general academic scores, applicants must satisfy one of the following English requirements [3]:

Qualification Minimum English Language Requirements
HKDSE Level 3 or above in English Language
IELTS Minimum overall band of 5.5 (Note: Certain medical programmes may require a higher score)
SAT New SAT: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 590+; Old SAT: Writing sub-score of 8+
UK GCSE/IGCSE Grade 4 (C) or above in English

GPA Standards for Non-JUPAS Admissions

While TWC evaluates applicants holistically based on academic merit and interview performance without strictly defining a minimum GPA, competitive trends provide a useful benchmark. Successful Non-JUPAS applicants typically hold a GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 or 4.3 scale).

For highly sought-after Allied Health programmes, competition is significantly steeper, with successful candidates often presenting a GPA of 3.3 to 3.5 or above. Prospective students are encouraged to aim for this higher bracket to remain competitive.

Non-JUPAS Entry Routes

For sub-degree students, there are two primary pathways to entering Tung Wah College:

1. Senior Year Entry

  • Target: Final-year students or graduates of locally recognised Associate Degrees or Higher Diplomas, typically in a related discipline.
  • Process: Eligible candidates must attend an interview. The college determines credit exemptions and the entry level (Year 2 or Year 3) based on prior subject mapping and interview performance.

2. Year 1 Entry

  • Target: Sub-degree students wishing to enter regulated disciplines such as Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Radiation Therapy, and Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Process: Due to the rigorous requirements for clinical practicum hours and foundational science modules, the vast majority of successful applicants are required to commence from Year 1.

Tung Wah College: Non-JUPAS Deadlines and Important Dates

TWC operates on a rolling basis. This means applications are reviewed as they are received, and offers are made until the programme is full. Early application is strongly advised, as availability decreases significantly later in the cycle.
