Overview of Master’s Programmes

UGent comprises 11 faculties offering over 200 Master’s programmes, approximately 79 of which are taught entirely in English, covering fields such as Humanities, Engineering, Medicine, and Bioscience Engineering [4]. Programmes are primarily categorised into three types, depending on the student’s background and career objectives:

  • Initial Master’s (ManaBa): Standard Master’s degrees, typically lasting 1 to 2 years.
  • Advanced Master’s (ManaMa): Designed for individuals who already hold a Master’s degree and wish to specialise in a specific field.
  • Joint/Erasmus Mundus Master’s: International programmes co-organised by UGent and other prestigious European institutions. Graduates may receive double or joint degrees, significantly enhancing their international competitiveness.

UGent’s pedagogical model emphasises a research-oriented approach, balancing theory with practical application. Students must independently complete a thesis and an oral defence prior to graduation. Applicants should possess strong independent thinking skills and evaluate their own capabilities before applying.

Entry Requirements and Admission Criteria

Initial Master’s (ManaBa) Academic Requirements

Applicants for Initial Master’s programmes must hold a relevant Belgian Bachelor’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree from an overseas university following at least three years of study. If your academic background differs from your target specialisation, the university typically requires the completion of a specific preparatory programme before entering the formal Master’s curriculum [5].

Advanced Master’s (ManaMa) Academic Requirements

Advanced Master’s programmes target students who already possess a Master’s qualification. Applicants must hold a relevant Belgian Master’s degree or an equivalent diploma from an overseas university. While most programmes only accept Master’s graduates, some may consider applicants holding an overseas Bachelor’s degree following at least four years of study [5].

Language Proficiency Requirements

As UGent programmes are taught in either English or Dutch, applicants must be mindful of the specific language requirements for their chosen faculty.

English Proficiency

Most English-taught programmes require a level between CEFR B2 and C1. Specific faculty requirements include:

  • C1 Level: Law, Business Data Science, Banking and Finance, and Linguistics (majoring in English).
  • B2 Level: Most Science and Engineering programmes, Photonics, Nuclear Engineering, and General Linguistics.
  • Specific Scores: Geology (TOEFL iBT 90 / IELTS 7.0), Nuclear Engineering (TOEFL iBT 79 / IELTS 5.5), Biomedical Engineering (TOEFL iBT 92 / IELTS 6.5), and Photonics Engineering (TOEFL iBT 87 / IELTS 6.5). For detailed requirements, please refer to the official language criteria [6].

Dutch Proficiency

For Dutch-taught programmes, UGent requires proof of proficiency upon enrolment:

  • C1 Level: Linguistics (Dutch combinations), Multilingual Communication, Interpreting, Translation, Teaching, and all programmes within the Faculty of Medicine.
  • B2 Level: Linguistics (non-Dutch combinations) and Photonics [6].
