History and Notable Alumni
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) was founded in 1880 by theologian and politician Abraham Kuyper. The original campus was located in the city centre of Amsterdam and primarily comprised the faculties of Theology, Law, and Humanities. As the university expanded, a Faculty of Medicine was established in Amsterdam-Zuid in 1907, followed by the Faculty of Science in 1930. Due to growing student numbers, the university relocated in 1973 to its current campus on Boelelaan in southern Amsterdam, adjacent to the Zuidas business district.[1]
As a research university with over a century of history, VU Amsterdam is known for its strong integration of higher education and social practice, providing rigorous academic training within a diverse learning environment. The university has produced numerous distinguished alumni, including former Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, former CEO of the Netherlands’ major bank Gerrit Zalm, prominent politician Pim Fortuyn, and Amazon CTO and Vice President Werner Vogels.[2]

Application Requirements for Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
Before applying to Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, students must first ensure they meet the Dutch VWO-equivalent academic qualifications and language proficiency standards. The relevant application requirements are as follows:
Academic Requirements
- Equivalent Qualification: Applicants must hold a secondary school diploma equivalent to the Dutch VWO level. For Hong Kong students, HKDSE results are generally accepted as meeting this requirement[10]. Certain programmes may require specific prerequisite subjects, such as Psychology[8].
- Bachelor’s Programmes: The university does not set a universal minimum grade requirement, but applicants are generally expected to have good academic results at the secondary level.
- Master’s Programmes: International students applying for a master’s programme must have their bachelor’s degree results converted to the Dutch grading system, generally requiring a score of 7.0/10 (approximately GPA 3.0–3.3), as seen in programmes like Sports Science[11].
English Language Requirements
Most English-taught programmes require applicants to demonstrate adequate English proficiency[12], for example:
- IELTS: Overall score of at least 6.5, with some programmes such as Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) requiring no less than 6.0 in individual components.
- TOEFL: Minimum overall score of 92, with component requirements varying by programme.
Students who have completed their secondary education in English or hold an IB Diploma with English as one of the exam subjects may apply for a language test waiver.
Dutch Language Requirements
VU Amsterdam has relatively low Dutch language requirements for students applying to English-taught programmes. However, programmes taught primarily in Dutch generally require a C1-level Dutch proficiency to ensure students can engage fluently in academic communication[12]. The university also offers Dutch language courses for international students to enhance their language skills.
Credit Remediation
Students who do not meet the direct entry requirements may be admitted through credit remediation. Completion of a foundation or bridging programme can satisfy the entry requirements. For example, students who do not meet the GPA requirements for competitive programmes like PPE may be offered conditional admission[13], and those applying for a Bachelor in Political Science can complete a preparatory foundation course[14].
Application Process
Students who meet the language and academic requirements can register via the Dutch national application platform, Studielink, which generally opens on 1 October of the year prior to study[15]. After registration, students must upload relevant documents, including academic transcripts, diplomas, and language certificates, via the university’s online application portal.
Applicants should also pay close attention to the specific application deadlines[16]:
